Depression - Possible Treatment

Depression treatments vary but there are two primary methods. These treatments, generally used together are medication and psychotherapy. Recent studies now indicate changes in lifestyles can have beneficial effects. These changes can be as simple as exercising regularly and taking dietary supplements.

While generally speaking, a particular medication or combination of medication may produce very significant results, good responses may be harder to achieve if the particular type of depression is resistant to medical treatment. In that case, a thorough assesment is required and this may eventually lead to psychotherapy in combination to focusing on lifestyle changes and changes or increases in medication.

Hospitalization of a very depressed individual may be required in some emergency cases particularly where the depressed individuals are regarded as dangerous to themselves or to others. Such individuals mnay be moved to the hospital until they are responsive to treat and no longer pose any danger to both themselves to the society at large.

A less drastic alternative treatment program is partial hospitalization. The patient is allowed to spend most of the day in a psychiatric hospital setting but spends the night at home. A typical
intensive care treatment cover group therapy, individual therapy and medication management. This type of treatment are often given to children and adolescents. Group therapy affords the opportunity of peer support with the inherent knowledge that they are not alone. That others also are having similar problems and feelings.

After one's recovery, there is a possibility of continue usage of antidepressant medication in order to reduce the chances of a relapse. The reduction may be as much as by half. This type of treatment may last up to three years. However some researches have shown that prolong use of these medications may have adverse physical effects. The exact reasons for this are unknown.
